Everyone may now have the Barbie Malibu BeachHouse on their minds with the release of Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated film — but here’s a real Malibu dream home.
This massive spread has an extended roof that extends in the wind like a sail — and a 100-foot-long infinity pool, says its designer and developer Scott Gillen, who named it the Cantilever House.
It’s one of five homes in a guarded and gated Malibu community that Gillen created, and it has just hit the market for $69.5 million.
Gillen built all five homes on spec — on 24 acres he bought for $50 million in 2017. They’re all inspired by midcentury design, built on a bluff overlooking Malibu Colony and the Pacific Ocean, and come with deeded access to Malibu Road.
It’s been a long haul. Gillen tells Gimme Shelter that the approval process for the development, called the Case, began in 2006.
The Cantilever House sits on 3.85 acres. It includes an outdoor kitchen, landscaped gardens, entertaining areas and that 100-foot infinity pool.
The home also features over-the-top design elements like a swiveling 1,280-pound teak front door that is 13 feet tall and 11 feet wide. There’s also a chef’s kitchen, terrazzo and white-oak floors, and glass walls that showcase views of Surfrider Beach, Palos Verdes and the Queen’s Necklace.
“The [teak] door is epic. I envisioned bringing a car in the living room. The door is big enough,” Gillen said.
The house gets its name from its 25-foot-deep cantilever roof, which extends over the ocean-facing patio to provide shade.
“Each of the five homes are special,” Gillen said. “They were built simultaneously, but the trick is that each has its own individuality. The Cantilever has a freestanding guest house and a cantilever hanging over the front porch overlooking whitewater views of Santa Monica Bay and the city lights. The roof system is amazing to look at. It’s really out there, hanging on the wind like a sail, with no structural posts.”
The other homes at the Case are: The Butterfly House, asking $95 million; the Edge, asking $69.9 million; the Glass Tunnel, which is slated for completion next year but asking $115 million off-market; and the Flat House, which is in escrow for an undisclosed price, Gillen says.
The listing brokers for the Cantilever House are Official’s Tyrone McKillen in LA and Tal Alexander, who co-founded the brokerage firm, in New York.
