The Miami residence that starchitect Chad Oppenheim originally designed and built 20 years ago for himself and his wife, Ilona, is up for grabs for a whopping $33 million. The tropical-modern mansion, known as Villa Allegra, is available through Official’s Oren Alexander and Tal Alexander.

Completed in 2003, Oppenheim famously hosted parties at the striking abode on Biscayne Bay for premiere brands like Audi and Ferrari, and he even held a fundraiser for the Wolfsonian-FIU museum, library, and research center in Miami Beach. Another fun fact: movie buffs may recognize Villa Allegra from its appearance in Michael Mann’s 2006 film Miami Vice, starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx.

The Florida home that Miami architect Chad Oppenheim personally designed for himself is up for sale.

“Director Michael Mann felt that our home reflected a new side of Miami,” Oppenheim told The New York Post back in 2014. “This was a real thrill since the show was one of the reasons I moved to Miami in the first place.”

Oppenheim, who also owns property in the Bahamas, Aspen, and California, originally bought the Sunset Islands lot in 2001 for $1 million and shelled out a cool $5 million for the build. Since then, the residence has been completely refurbished. Oppenheim recently told Mansion Global that he spent an additional $6 million updating the property during the pandemic using a palette of soft creams and pinky beiges offset with organic shapes, rich textures, and natural materials such as walnut and sandstone.

The residence embraces Oppenheim’s pared-back aesthetic.

Oppenheim, who’s known for his commitment to sustainability and warm minimalist design, included several eco-friendly touches: The home mostly relies on cross-ventilation instead of air conditioning to keep cool and uses solar panels for the pool and hot water supply. Outside, the boxy, ultra-modern home is surrounded by a garden of lush, native vegetation conceptualized by award-winning landscape architect Raymond Jungles. There’s a rain-fed reflection pool near the front door, and out back, there’s 80 linear feet of water frontage.

A media room is entered via a secret door in the bookcase.

The home has six bedrooms and seven bathrooms within approximately 6,000 square feet of living space, while the grounds comprise a swimming pool and two boat docks that can accommodate a 75-footer. A few of the highlights of the home include a library/media room with a secret bookcase door, a 25-foot-tall outdoor shower, and, of course, the primary suite. The latter is decked out with a private travertine terrace with a soaking tub and seating area.

Oppenheim founded his eponymous practice in 1999 and now has design studios in Miami and Basel, Switzerland. Over the years, he’s been involved in several notable projects, including Ten Museum Park in South Florida. He also designed filmmaker Michael Bay’s house in Los Angeles and teamed up with Pharrell Williams on a youth center.
